Get Emotionally Healthy with Casual Sex

casual sexThe one-night-stand just got some scientific support! A recent study from the University of Minnesota states that those who hook up for casual sex are just as emotionally healthy as people in a committed relationship. Take that, conservative prudes and nay-sayers!

Researchers asked 1,300 young adults aged 18 to 24 about their most recent sexual hookup and their emotional well-being immediately afterward. About one-fifth of the group surveyed said their last sexual experience was casual, and yet their sense of self-esteem and general well-being was no different that the four-fifths who claimed their last sexual experience was part of a steady relationship.

Researchers were surprised by the results. Says Marla Eisenberg, assistant professor at the university School of Public Health: “The conventional wisdom is that casual sex, ‘friends with benefits,’ and hooking up is hurtful. That’s what we’ve been teaching kids for decades.”
